Story

Dear friends & family

I'm making a difference and fundraising for 4 ASD Kids Charitable Trust, a cause that is close to my heart.

Our family’s understanding of living with high functioning Autism (aka ‘Aspergers Syndrome’) is relatively new, with the official diagnosis made less than 18 months ago. But our experience living with Autism characteristics goes back much further.

Aspergers is less common in girls, and often the symptoms are milder (or less obvious), which often leads to much later diagnoses.  This can make life tough for both the ‘Aspie’ and their family, because until there is a diagnosis – there is misunderstanding.  Misunderstanding leads to an ongoing battle of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole and not understanding why - no matter how much of your time, energy, love and effort you spend - it just won’t fit.

The official diagnosis gave us the confirmation we needed to start approaching our day to day life from a new perspective – it can still be tough, but at least we know why, and over time we are all learning different ways to approach, communicate, respond, react to our day to day challenges together.

Autism is being talked about more and with more awareness, comes more understanding, support and acceptance.  That is why I want to do what I can to help raise funds for charities such as 4ASD Kids.  These kids (and the teens and adults they are to become) along with their families need more support to enable them to feel more secure and accepted for their quirks and to feel they have a place in this confusing, overwhelming world, as much as anyone else.

Parenting an aspie can be overwhelming and often my parenting methods are misunderstood – this is hardest when it is from friends and family members.  But my challenges are nothing compared to my daughter’s as she is trying to make sense of life while also dealing with being misunderstood by people around her in the process.  This is one of the cruellest aspects of Autism - feeling different, excluded and judged for being yourself even though you have so much to offer.

If you want to know more about our story, please feel free to ask.

I have set myself a goal to raise $1,000.00 and I need your help with a donation, big or small, every amount counts!

You'll get a receipt automatically via email.

You can help even more by 'liking', leaving a 'comment' and 'sharing' my page too. Every little bit helps to reach my target of $1,000.00. So please dig deep for this great cause and help make a difference.

Thank you for your support

4 ASD Kids Charitable Trust

In 2009 we went public about our son Max’s battle with autism. It’s something that we considered very deeply but felt by telling our story we may be able to assist families with similar challenges. After the initial publicity we were so overwhelmed by the messages of support and assistance that we formed our charity, 4 ASD Kids. Our dream is to be able to change the lives of families with children battling with an Autism Spectrum Disorder by assisting them to access the early intervention treatment that we believe is critical to giving these kids the best chance at leading a normal life and reaching their full potential.
